Because of his lack of moral courage when the slavery issue cried for resolution, we had a great and terrible civil war. Because he sought concensus when bold action was imperative,he allowed the set pieces of that war to align for conflict. Buchanan is lucky; he had ample detractors on either side of Mason-Dixon who might have sought his hide.
